Background
The Advisory Group on the United Nations Code for Trade and Transport Locations (UN/LOCODE) convened in its 2023 meeting in May to deliberate on key maintenance policy issues. According to the constraints on resources available to the ECE secretariat, the Advisory Group recommended the establishment of a single task force, led by the Vice Chair and supported by the secretariat, to systematically address these challenges raised recently during the UN/LOCODE maintenance (Decision 23-16).
In this regard, the UN/LOCODE Task Force will be instituted in line with terms of reference (ToR) to ensure the expect recommendations to be submitted to the next meeting of the UN/LOCODE Advisory Group in 2024.
Objectives
The kick-off meeting of the Task Force is organized, aiming to:
- Formally launch the operations of the Task Force
- Clarify its tasks, specified in the ToR:
- Identifying small fishery ports to meet the FAO demand as recommended by the FAO Global Record Working Group (GRWG)
- Undertaking a feasibility study to fast-track UN/LOCODE as an ISO standard
- Addressing the co-existence of UN/LOCODEs assigned to locations (areas) with legacy UN/LOCODEs assigned to sub-locations (points)
- Testing of the new web-based online Data Maintenance Request system
- Call for volunteer leader(s) to each task mentioned above, ensuring to address, in a collaborative way, the critical issues discussed in 2023 Meeting of the UN/LOCODE Advisory Group.
