Mission to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia 30-31 May 2023

Ethiopia: A low-income country with a population of 120.283 million. According to the World Bank, the country ranked 20th out of 48 African countries (World Bank 2019), with same fatalities rate per 100 000 as Kenya and Sao Tome and Principe (28). Ethiopia has acceded to 1 of 7 the UN road safety legal instruments.

During the mission, the Special Envoy met with the following officials to advocate for safer roads in the country and beyond:
•    H.E. Dr. Alemu Sime, Minister of Transport and Logistics; 
•    H.E. Dr. Birhanu Nega, Minister of Education;
•    Dr. Dereje Duguma, State Minister of Health; 
•    Mr. Antonio Pedro, Acting Executive Secretary, ECA;
•    Mr. Jantirar Abay, Deputy Mayor of Addis Ababa;
•    Ms. Abibatou Wane, UN Resident Coordinator a.i. in Ethiopia; Ms. Aurelia Calabró, Head, UNIDO Ethiopia and other representatives from the UNCT.
Moreover, the Special Envoy attended two site visits at the following:
•    AaBET hospital;
•    Misale Driver Training Academy.

Lastly, the Special Envoy joined a roundtable engaging the National Civil Society Organizations working on road safety and transport.
