On 9 February 2023, the Special Envoy met with H.E. Ms. Himalee Subhashini Arunatilaka, Permanent Representative of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka to the UN Office and other international organizations in Geneva. Throughout the discussion, the Special Envoy highlighted the road safety situation at the global and national level; commended the country for engaging with the World Bank on several road safety activities, including a recent programme entitled “Delivering Road Safety in Sri Lanka, Leadership Priorities and Initiatives to 2030”; encouraged accession to the seven UN Road Safety Conventions and implementing strong laws addressing pedestrians and motorcyclists since these account for the highest number of fatalities; and urged applying to the UNRSF’s call for proposals from 6 February to 3 April 2023.
