The small group on mine tailings safety, comprised of members of the Industrial Accidents Convention’s Bureau and Working Group on Implementation and of the Joint Expert Group on Water and Industrial Accidents, will convene to further assess whether there is a need to revise and update the Guidelines to facilitate the identification of hazardous activities for the purposes of the UNECE Industrial Accidents Convention (ECE/CP.TEIA/38/Add.1) to cover more comprehensively the hazards and risks arising from tailings management facilities. It will discuss the development of a related official document for the Conference of the Parties at its thirteenth meeting, as requested by the Conference at its twelfth meeting (ECE/CP.TEIA/44), and members’ assessments of the options that could be recommended to the Conference for action in the next biennium 2025-2026.
