Forging a Just Transition: Towards Green Jobs and Rights-Based Futures

03 - 14 July 2023
Palais des Nations Geneva Switzerland

Within the framework of the 61st United Nations Graduate Study Programme, the secretariat, with the support from the Chair of the Group of Experts on Coal Mine Methane and Just Transition engaged with young energy experts from around the world to discuss the issue of mapping the ongoing just energy transition efforts across the UNECE region and the steps that need to be taken to accelerate their progress. Under the supervision of their mentors the students worked on a document titled Forging a Just Transition: Towards Green Jobs and Rights-Based Futures (available below), which identified parameters indicating the level of a country’s readiness for just transition within its coal-mining sector. The final report prepared by the students outlines the findings of their two-week-long research and provides an initial selection of relevant indicators, grouping them into distinct categories. This offers a solid basis for further work on developing a universal just transition readiness framework.
