The GGKP webinar on how to strengthen mineral resource governance in 2021 addressed this topic from several angles. Speakers discussed progress that has been made on the United Nations Environment Assembly resolution on mineral resource governance (UNEP/EA.4/Res.19) and important information to know before the opening of the fifth assembly in 2021. They covered whether a new governance framework for mineral resources is needed and which practical implications should be considered. In addition, the speakers discussed positive actions that can be taken in 2021.

The Secretary of the Industrial Accidents Convention contributed to the webinar by addressing a question on the progress made and future of mine tailings. She identified current and future safety issues, and highlighted the decision on strengthening mine tailings safety in the UNECE region and beyond, which Parties adopted at the eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties, and the importance of using the UNECE Safety Guidelines and Good Practices for Tailings Management Facilities (see here in English and Russian).
