OSCE press conference “Tailings storage facilities: threats to transboundary waters of Ukraine”

Kyiv and online

02 March 2021 10:00 - 11:30

At the press conference, the results of the  assessment of the state of the Tailings Storage Facilities in two river basins of Ukraine - Dniester and Siverskyi Donets were presented. These studies were conducted within the framework of the project “Enabling Transboundary Cooperation and Integrated Water Resources Management in the Dniester River Basin”, supported by GEF, UNDP, OSCE and UNECE. Please find the study results as presented by Ms. Iryna Nikolaieva, PhD, Consultant to OSCE projects, here (PDF).

UNECE presented the decision on strengthening mine tailings safety in the UNECE region and beyond, adopted at the 11th meeting of the Conference of the Parties in December 2020, as well as an overview of its actions and next steps towards implementation. The presentation also built on the conclusions of the online seminar on mine tailings safety in the UNECE region and beyond, held on 1 December 2020. The intervention by UNECE focused on the importance of risk assessment and mapping using the UNECE Safety guidelines and good practices for tailings management facilities, and its recently updated methodology to assess and map tailings hazards and tailings risks. It also highlighted the need for up-to-date contingency planning in a transboundary context. The presentation is available here (PDF).
