Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS)


Amendments to the first revised edition (2005)

At its third session (14 December 2006), the Committee of Experts adopted a set of amendments to the GHS, which were consolidated in document ST/SG/AC.10/34/Add.3 and ST/SG/AC.10/34/Add.3/Corr.1.

The second revised edition of the GHS (ST/SG/AC.10/30/Rev.2) published in 2007, takes account of all these amendments, which include new and revised provisions concerning, inter alia:

  • classification and labelling provisions (e.g. for unstable explosives and toxic gas mixtures);
  • guidance on the interpretation of the building block approach;
  • additional guidance on respiratory and skin sensitization;
  • guidance on how to consider important factors in determining the carcinogenic potential of chemicals;
  • the revision of Annex 3, to take into account the codification of hazard and precautionary statements; and
  • a new subsection to be added under section 14 of the Safety Data Sheet, concerning cargoes to be carried in bulk according to Annex II of the MARPOL Convention and the IBC Code.
