Regional Conference on Road mortality hosted by the Ministry of Infrastructure, Land Transport and Accessibility of Senegal and the WHO

On 3 March 2023, the Special Envoy contributed virtually to the Regional Conference on Road mortality by the Ministry of Infrastructure, Land Transport and Accessibility of Senegal and the WHO. The Special Envoy expressed his appreciation for the Francophone countries of Africa working together to combat the terrible pandemic of road crash fatalities. While this continent still represents the biggest crisis, with 26.6 road crash fatalities per 100,000 population, Africa is also the greatest opportunity. Therefore, the Special Envoy urged stakeholders to build a strong data system to adequately monitor progress towards the 2030 goal of halving traffic deaths and injuries. Good data is essential to develop an effective roadmap toward improvement. Moreover, the Special Envoy highlighted that a cleaner transport system not only saves lives from crashes, but also from the related health problems that result from congestion on the roads. He concluded by saying that prioritizing and optimizing the linkage between safe mobility and climate agenda is critical.
