Mission to Washington DC, USA, 6 – 9 March 2023

The Special Envoy travelled to Washington DC, USA from 6 to 9 March to strengthen the Friends of the Special Envoy network and mobilize stakeholders in the US Capital, especially on the outcome of the 2022 HLM on road safety.  To discuss 2023 travels, key priorities and initiatives in Latin America, Africa and South Asia – such as Safe and Affordable Helmets, the Road Safety Campaign with JCDecaux and UN vehicle regulations – he met with the following colleagues at the World Bank and International Finance Corporation:  

•    Mr. Martin Raiser, Vice President for South Asia, World Bank; 
•    Mr. Guangzhe Chen, Vice President for Infrastructure, World Bank;
•    Mr. Makhtar Diop; Managing Director, International Finance Corporation;
•    Mr. Nicolas Peltier, Director for Global Transport and Africa Practice Managers, World Bank; 
•    Ms. Maria Marcela Silva, Director for Infrastructure, Latin American Countries; World Bank;
•    African Countries Transport Managers, World Bank.

Also, to strengthen road safety efforts in the USA and widen the Friends of the Special Envoy network, the Special Envoy met with the following Government officials, UN representatives and partners:  

•    H.E. Mr. Luis Almagro, Secretary-General, Organization of the American States;
•    H.E. Ms. Mariangela Zappia, Ambassador of Italy;
•    Mr. Derek Mitchell, President, National Democratic Institute;
•    Mr. Donald Gresset, Director, UNDP;
•    Ms. Julie Abraham, Director, Office of International Transportation and Trade, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration;
•    Ms. Annie Petsonk, Assistant Secretary for Aviation and International Affairs, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration;
•    Mr. Nanda Sriinivasan, Associate Administrator for Research and Program Development, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration;
•    Ms. Narissa Cook, Deputy Assistant Secretary, Bureau of International Organizations.
