2017 Vision Zero Conference in Stockholm, Sweden

On 15 June, the Special Envoy spoke at the opening of the Vision Zero Conference 2017, which aimed to promote the road towards zero deaths, a concept which was introduced by Sweden in 1997. Sweden ranks among the highest performing countries in the world for road safety and managed to reduce the number of casualties on its roads by more than half in twenty years. Organized by the Swedish Ministry of Enterprise and Innovation, Trafikverket (Swedish Transport Administration) and Transportstyrelsen (Swedish Transport Agency), the two-day Conference gathered policy makers, road safety experts, together with high-level representatives from the industry and international organisations to discuss best practices, innovation and future challenges. During his speech, the Special Envoy congratulated Sweden for the example it has provided for the rest of the world, as well as highlighted the need for increased resources for road safety. The Special Envoy provided update on the work that is being conducted on the draft proposal on the establishment of a UN Road Safety Fund and highlighted the role of all sectors to reach the UN Sustainable Development Goal to halve global road fatalities and injuries by 2020.
