Caribbean Road Safety Regional Workshop

A regional workshop dedicated to road safety was held on 8 & 9 August 2019 in Kingston, Jamaica, which was initiated by the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety.
The capacity-building workshop brought together over 40 experts representing 11 English-speaking Caribbean countries to discuss the current road safety situation in the region and to share best practices and lessons learned.
During his opening remarks, the Special Envoy emphasized the fact that an average of 1,700 lives are lost on the road every single day, a figure that has only been increasing over the years, and the Caribbean region accounts for 11 percent of global road traffic deaths.
He called for action from all participants to make a difference: “This is the very reason I decided to convene this road safety workshop, with the hope that all of you will serve as ambassadors in your respective countries. We must ensure that by 2030, we see dramatic improvements in safe and sustainable mobility in the Caribbean”.
The two-day workshop focused on effective data collection, stronger regulatory framework and enforcement as well as safe infrastructure and vehicles.
Hosted by Jamaica’s Ministry of Transport, the National Road Safety Council, the workshop was co-organized by United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and Caribbean (ECLAC), the Pan-American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
