Building capacity to support women’s economic advancement
We promote women’s economic empowerment by providing capacity building directly to women entrepreneurs as well as to our member States. We offer workshops to equip women with the skills to run their own businesses effectively and profitably. We strengthen our member states’ national capacity to support women’s entrepreneurship development and to produce high-quality statistics, including gender statistics.
What we do to build capacity for women’s economic empowerment
- We work to enhance entrepreneurship skills of women in the region. Micro and small enterprises, many of which are run by women, are an important tool to create new opportunities for women and to generate income. We therefore offer international capacity-building workshops on information and communication technologies (ICTs) and support systems for women entrepreneurs. We specifically promote the development of women's entrepreneurship in South-East Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia.
- We build capacities in the national statistical systems of our member States. UNECE technical cooperation activities provide government officials in South-East Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia with high-level expertise in statistics. Training workshops and other technical cooperation activities are conducted in response to countries’ request for assistance to improve their statistical capacity, including gender statistics.
In focus: Women’s entrepreneurship
Setting up and running one's own business can be a route to economic independence and empowerment and create new opportunities for women. By doing so, women entrepreneurs contribute to sustaining economic growth, job creation and improving the living standards of their families and communities. We therefore promote the development of women's entrepreneurship in South-East Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia, by equipping women with specific knowledge and skills, providing networking opportunities and assisting in dealing with public and private institutions. These workshops are organized biannually since 2006. The last one took place in June-July 2020.
