Rome City Council to support the adoption of the new “Plan for Road Safety and Soft and Sustainable Mobility”

On 14 September, the Special Envoy attended and spoke at the meeting of the Rome City Council to support the adoption of a new "Plan for Road Safety and Soft and Sustainable Mobility", called by Ms. Virginia Raggi, Mayor of Rome. The representatives of road victim associations as well as the local traffic police participated in the event and expressed support of the new initiative. Following the remarks of the Special Envoy, the City Council adopted the "Vision Zero" strategy, which aims to halve the number of deaths on the road and reduce by 35% the number of injuries in Rome by 2020. Another key element of Rome's Plan is the establishment of a dedicated Fund to support road safety actions. The resources for the Fund would be generated from the revenue collected from road fines and speed cameras.

The Special Envoy had the opportunity to meet with the following delegates to reinforce the message that road safety should be a top priority for city development and the importance of monitoring progress on road safety policies:

o Ms. Virginia Raggi, Mayor of Rome

o Mr. Enrico Stefano, President of the Mobility and Road Safety Commission, City of Rome

o Ms. Linda Meleo, Counselor for Transport, City of Rome

o Mr. Marcello De Vito, President of the Rome City Council

o Mr. Diego Porta, Head of Traffic Local Police, City of Rome
