Following Special Envoy's official visit to Nigeria in August 2017, the Federal Road Safety Corps of Nigeria requested Technical Assistance on UN Road Safety legal instruments related to Road Signs and Signals and Road Traffic Administration.
In response to government’s request, the Special Envoy, in collaboration with United Nations Economic Commission for Europe organized a national capacity-building Workshop for national road safety stakeholders on UN Road Safety Conventions, especially the 1968 Conventions on Road Signs and Signals and on Road Traffic. In the course of the workshop, a team of UNECE experts provided an overview of UNECE’s work, ITC and its relevant working parties as well as of the following UN Road Safety Conventions:
• 1968 Convention on Road Traffic
• 1968 Convention on Road Signs and Signals
• 1958 and 1998 Agreements on Technical Vehicle Regulations
• 1997 Agreement on Periodic Technical Inspections of Vehicles
• 1957 Agreement on Transport of Dangerous Goods by Road
The workshop was hosted by the Federal Road Safety Corps of Nigeria and took place in Abuja on 28-29 November 2017. Nigeria’s high-level officials, such as the Minister of Power, Works, and Housing, Secretary to the Government of the Federation and FRSC Corps Marshal participated at the opening of the event. The workshop brought together over 200 road safety officials representing Federal Government and 36 state-level authorities engaged with road safety. The workshop covered UN Road Safety Conventions and their contribution to improving road safety; advantages, implications and challenges for Contracting parties; as well as accession process for Member States. The objective of the workshop was to encourage Nigeria’s accession and successful implementation of all UN RS Conventions and to increase awareness of the correct application of road signs and signals that conform with the 1968 Convention on Road Signs and Signals, to which Nigeria is a contracting party.
The UNECE and the Special Envoy will continue supporting Nigeria in their road safety efforts and interest in accession to the UN RS Conventions.
