High- Level Stakeholder and Ministerial Conference and adoption of the Valetta Declaration, Malta

On 28 March 2017, the Special Envoy participated in the High- Level Stakeholder and Ministerial Conference with Ms. Violeta Bulc, European Commissioner for Mobility and Transport, and Mr. Joe Mizzi, Minister for Transport and Infrastructure of Malta. The Special Envoy addressed stakeholders from more than 25 European countries while congratulating European stakeholders for their efforts in reducing road traffic fatalities in Europe. The Special Envoy encouraged them to halve road deaths in Europe by 2020, highlighted recent inclusion of road safety in the UN SDGs, and encouraged continuation of their awareness raising efforts. The Special Envoy, Ms. Violeta Bulc and transport Ministers from EU Member-States, under the Maltese Presidency of the Council of the European Union, signed the Valetta Declaration for Road Safety, reaffirming their commitment to improving road safety.


After the Conference, the Special Envoy had the following bilateral meetings: 
Malta Road Safety Council

The Special Envoy presented his recent activities and the terms of his mandate. The Special Envoy and the Council covered a range of issues, from road traffic crashes in the country to the importance of the post-crash response. The Council members explained about the introduction of a driving points system for Maltese drivers and the problem of speeding in the country. The following members of the council participated at the meeting:

o Mr Pierre Vella, Executive Manager of the Malta Road Safety Council

o Mr Tonio Cini, President of Malta Motorsport Federation (MMF)

o Dr Michael Galea, MMF Discipline Commission

o Mr Philip Agius, Vice-President of the Touring Club Malta
Mr. Joe Mizzi, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure of Malta 
The Special Envoy had a number of meetings with Minister Mizzi as well as presented alongside the Minister at the opening. The Special Envoy highlighted his recent activities and initiatives on road safety. Together with Ms. Violeta Bulc and Mr. Mizzi, they signed the Valetta Declaration on Road Safety to reinstate their commitment to advancing road safety.

The Special Envoy thanked Mr. Muscat for the meeting and presented an overview of his activities and mandate. He also briefly mentioned his meeting with the Malta Road Safety Council. 

Mr. Dan Tok, Minister of Transport of the Czech Republic, and Mr. Fridrich, Director of the International and EU Affairs Department
The Special Envoy briefly met with Mr. Dan Tok and presented him with an overview of his activities and mandate as well as upcoming priorities.
