The Special Envoy participated in the first National Road Safety Conference in Port Louis and gave an opening statement. In his speech, the Special Envoy highlighted potential solutions for advancing road safety, such as responsible behavior on the road, safer vehicles, safer infrastructure, better legislation, stronger enforcement and improved post-crash care. He also encouraged Mauritius to become a leader in the African region for road safety issues, and applauded government’s commitment to the 2025 national target to halve the number of road traffic fatalities. In addition, the Special Envoy provided an update on the proposal for establishing a UN Road Safety Fund and recommended accession to UN Road Safety Conventions.
