Mission to Nairobi, Kenya 31 May-6 June 2023

Kenya: A lower-middle-income country with a population of 53 million. In 2021, the estimated rate per 100 000 population was 28.2 (WHO, 2023). Kenya has acceded to 1 out of 7 UN road safety legal instruments.

During the mission, the Special Envoy met with the following officials to advocate for safer roads in the country:
•    H.E. Ms. Amina Mohamed, Former Minister of Sports, Culture and Heritage of Kenya;
•    H.E. Mr. Arnaud Suquet, Ambassador of France to Kenya;
•    H.E. Mr. Valentin Zellweger, Ambassador of Switzerland to Kenya;
•    Ms. Maimunah Mohd Sharif, Executive Director, UN-Habitat;
•    Mr. Oli Stanton, Founder, OKOA rescue and roadside safety network.

On 5 June, the Special Envoy participated in a roundtable hosted by Mr. Jochen Flachsbarth, State Secretary of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Lastly, on 6 June, the Special Envoy delivered opening remarks at the MaMa Cycling side-event organized on the margins of the 2nd session of the UN-Habitat Assembly, by its Executive Director and the First Lady of Kenya, H.E. Ms. Rachel Ruto. This was the occasion to celebrate a mode of transportation that embodies inclusion and sustainability.
