Mission to Tegucigalpa, Honduras 21-23 August 2023

Honduras: A lower-income country with a population of 10.27 million. In 2021, the estimated rate per 100 000 population was 18.5 (WHO, 2023). Honduras has acceded to 1 out of 7 UN road safety legal instruments.

During the mission, the Special Envoy met with the following officials to advocate for safer roads in the country:

•    Mr. Hector Zelaya, Private Secretary of the President of Honduras;
•    Mr. Juan Manuel Aguilar, Director-General, National Police;
•    Mr. Sebastián Pastor, President, Teletón;
•    Ms. Alice Shackelford, Resident Coordinator and the UN Country Team in Honduras.

The Special Envoy also joined a roundtable with the Chancellors of the main Universities in Honduras and a separate one with the Board of Directors of the Association of Municipalities of Honduras (AMHON).

Lastly, the Special Envoy visited Teletón, the center specialized in post-crash rehabilitation.
