Mission to Asunción, Paraguay 30-31 August 2023

Paraguay: An upper-middle-income country with a population of 6.7 million. In 2021, the estimated rate per 100 000 population was 21 (WHO, 2023). . Paraguay has not acceded any of the 7 UN road safety legal instruments.

During the mission, the Special Envoy met with the following officials to advocate for safer roads in the country:

•    H.E. Mr. Santiago Pena Palacios, President;
•    H.E. Mr. Rubén Ramirez Lezcano, Minister of Foreign Affairs;
•    H.E. Ms. Claudia Centurión, Minister of Public Works and Communications;
•    H.E. Dr. Maria Teresa Baran Wasilchuk, Minister of Public Health and Social Welfare;
•    H.E. Mr. Enrique Riera Escudero, Minister of the Interior;
•    Mr. Oscar Rodriguez, Mayor of Asunción;
•    Ms. Maria del Carmen Gonzalez De Porro, Executive Director, National Traffic and Road Safety Agency (ANTSV);
•    Mr. Mario Samaja, Resident Coordinator and the UN Country Team in Paraguay;
•    Ms. Matilde Bordon, Country Representative, World Bank.
