Mission to Brussels, Belgium, 8-9 December 2022

Belgium: A high-income country with a population of 11,5 million. According to the European Commission, Belgium ranks ranked 13th highest road death rate out of 28 countries in Europe (4,3 road deaths per 100,000 inhabitants). Belgium has acceded to 5 out of 7 UN road safety legal instruments.

The Special Envoy participated in the Road Safety Results Conference – closing session. On the occasion, the European Commission awarded the Special Envoy with the Lifetime Achievement Award for contribution to Road Safety.

Moreover, the Special Envoy participated as a guest speaker at the Reform talks, upon invitation of the European Commission Structural Reform Support Director-General, Mr. Mario Nava.

During the mission, the Special Envoy met with the following officials to advocate for safer roads in the country and European Union:
•    H.E. Mr. Georges Gilkinet, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Transport, Government of Belgium;
•    H.E. Ms. Adina Vălean, European Commissioner for Transport;
•    Mr. Kristian Schmidt, Director Land, Director-General Move, European Commission and European Road Safety Coordinator;
•    Mr. Mohammed Mezghani, Secretary-General, International Association of Public Transport (UITP);
•    UN Country Team (UNCT) Belgium.
