Economic Overview

 

UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (2022-2026) 

UNECE is a signatory of the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework and contributes in particular to the following strategic priorities:

  • Outcome 1.1: By 2027, institutions deliver human rights-based, evidence-informed and gender-responsive services for all, with the focus on those who are left behind.
  • Outcome 2.1:  By 2027, more accountable and transparent human rights-based and gender-responsive governance empowers all people of Moldova to participate in and to contribute to development processes.         
  • Outcome 3.1: By 2027, all people of Moldova, especially the most vulnerable, benefit from inclusive, competitive and sustainable economic development and equal access to decent work and productive employment.   
  • Outcome 4.1: By 2027, institutions and all people of Moldova benefit from and contribute to green and resilient development, sustainable use of natural resources and effective gender-responsive climate change action and disaster risk management.

UNECE works in close cooperation with the Resident Coordinator and the United Nations Country Team.

 

Key highlights

Energy

UNECE continues supporting the Republic of Moldova in its work to improve energy efficiency and increase the share of renewable energy in the energy mix and in promoting green transformation and resilient energy systems (SDG7).

The Republic of Moldova is a beneficiary country of project “Improving the energy efficiency of the global building supply chain industry and its products to deliver high performance buildings”, funded by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) Germany, as well as of project “Enhancing understanding of the implications and opportunities of moving to carbon neutrality in the UNECE region across the power and energy intensive industries by 2050.”

Environment

The Republic of Moldova is a Party to 5 UNECE environmental conventions and several of their protocols.

UNECE is working with the authorities of the Republic of Moldova towards active engagement under the Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution, especially when it comes to the amended versions of the latest Protocols to the Convention, including the 1999 Protocol to Abate Acidification, Eutrophication and Ground-level Ozone (SDG3 and SDG13).

UNECE is also assisting the Republic of Moldova in developing a national PRTR and modernizing environmental information system under the Aarhus Convention and the Protocol on Pollutant Release and Transfer Registers (PRTRs) (SDG 3 and SDG13).

As a Party to the Industrial Accidents Convention and a beneficiary of its Assistance and Cooperation Programme, UNECE is ready to support the Republic of Moldova in the establishment of National Policy Dialogues (NPD) for Industrial Safety.

Forests

UNECE is focused on strengthening the forest sector in general, with a particular focus on the country’s policy framework on forest landscape restoration (SDG13 and SDG15). UNECE has recently assisted the national authorities in drafting a feasibility study to assess the sector of forest reproductive material in the country and has organized a workshop to discuss the applicability of the study’s findings and recommendations.  

Gender equality

The standards body of Moldova has signed the Declaration on Gender-Responsive Standards and Standards Development (SDG5, SDG9 and SDG12).

UNECE is also supporting women’s economic empowerment through action-oriented recommendations, aimed at bolstering ended-to-end supply chain operations of female-owned enterprises.

Population

UNECE has been actively working with the relevant national ministry to mainstream ageing and to prepare a roadmap for mainstreaming aging to implement the Regional Implementation Strategy of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing (SDG3).

Statistics

UNECE and the National Bureau of Statistics have been working to implement priority actions for the new strategy for the development of official statistics in the Republic of Moldova, including carrying out two sector reviews in February 2023. UNECE has joined forces with the Resident Coordinator’s office, UNFPA and several other UN agencies to support the National Bureau of Statistics to evaluate their previous national strategy for the development of statistics and to formulate a new one.

Trade

UNECE is working to strengthen the national capacity to implement regulatory and procedural trade policies to achieve SDGs and increase the contribution of trade to build a stronger and more resilient economy. This includes supporting efforts to digitalize information exchange along multimodal transport corridors (SDG9).

UNECE is also supporting women’s economic empowerment through action-oriented recommendations, aimed at bolstering ended-to-end supply chain operations of female-owned enterprises (SDG5).

There in an opportunity for the Republic of Moldova to accelerate circular economy transition by active participation in the Circular STEP stakeholder engagement platform to exchange experience, challenges and learn about good practices and tools for circular economy transition (SDG8, SDG9 and SDG12).
