PUBLIC COMMENT
The UNECE Expert Group on Resource Management (EGRM) is pleased to present for public comment the draft report “Application of the United Nations Framework Classification for Resources (UNFC) and the United Nations Resource Management System (UNRMS): The Role of Nuclear Energy in Sustainable Development - Entry Pathways”.
The focus of this report is to explore the possible role for nuclear energy in the portfolio of options supporting sustainable development. Some countries choose to pursue nuclear energy with the view that it can play an important role in their energy mix, while other countries have decided not to depend on nuclear energy for a variety of considerations. This report meets a need expressed by decision and policy makers in countries who are weighing nuclear power as an option.
The report is expected to contribute to good practices in natural resource management through application of fundamental principles of sustainable resource management. Both UNFC and UNRMS are anchored in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and action on climate change, with a premise of putting natural resources to “service” for society. Many of the innovative approaches presented in this draft report are relevant not only to nuclear energy but also to other energy resources.
