IRF & UNECE ITS Event

"Governance and Infrastructure for smart and autonomous mobility"

Geneva, Switzerland , 04 December 2018

In a world of smart, connected and autonomous mobility what is the role that infrastructure plays and will play and how can it keep pace with the technology developments happening in the motor vehicles industry and overall the way people move? In such a rapid changing environment, what is the right governance model public authorities should adopt? The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and IRF convened key stakeholders to debate these issues at an event hosted at the UN headquarters in Geneva on 4th December 2018.

In 2012, the International Road Federation (IRF) led a collaborative effort that resulted into the publication of the “IRF Vienna Manifesto on ITS”. The document laid out a series of policy recommendations for political leaders and decision-makers to create proper policy frameworks to unleash the full potential of ITS. Six years down the road, the key areas on which policy recommendations were formulated still remain work in progress in many countries of the world. While taking stock of this six year journey to assess progress, IRF looks now at the emerging challenges with the aim to develop, in close collaboration with UNECE, enabling frameworks that will allow to properly address those challenges. IRF was pleased to join hands with UNECE for the organisation of a high-level ITS event in Geneva to kick start this collaborative dialogue among key ITS stakeholders.

The organization of this event by UNECE corresponds to one of the 20 global actions to promote the use of ITS as defined on the ITS road map adopted by the Inland Transport Committee available here: PDF. Since 2012 an annual event is organized, exploring one or more actions of the ITS roadmap. UNECE was pleased to collaborate with IRF in 2018 and gain insight in the road ITS related activities and look at the innovations at the service of ITS.
