First meeting of the High-Level Consultative Committee for the Third Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety

On 7 February 2019, the Special Envoy participated in the first meeting of the High-Level Consultative Committee at the OECD headquarters in Paris. The meeting was aimed at preparing for the third Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety, which will be hosted by the government of Sweden in February 2020. The meeting was co-organized by the Government of Sweden and the World Health Organization.

The Special Envoy addressed the audience alongside the Secretary-General of the International Transport Forum, State Secretary to the Minister for Infrastructure of Sweden, and a representative from WHO.

In his remarks, among the achievements the Special Envoy emphasized from the Decade of Action for Road Safety were increased visibility, deeper engagement of stakeholders, the establishment of the United Nations Road Safety Trust Fund, and increased number of contracting parties to the United Nations road safety conventions. However, he expressed his hope for more progress in low-income countries and coordinated approach post-2020. The Special Envoy encouraged more efforts towards achieving both road safety related SDG targets and reiterated his strong commitment to strategic and effective partnerships towards accelerated progress.
Among his recommendations for priorities of the Ministerial Conference are to ensure high-level participation, to secure solid commitments from governments, to highlight the need for adequate financing at the international and national levels and to promote the UN legal instruments as a key tool to strengthen road safety regulatory framework.
