Bilateral Meting with Minister of Transport of the Republic of Latvia

On 17 September, the Special Envoy met with Minister Augulis and presented his mandate and current priorities as well as shared about on-going activities to improve road safety. The Special Envoy spoke about potential ways to improve road safety, highlighting five pillars of the Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety. 
a country in the Baltic region of Northern Europe, Latvia has a population of 1.9 million inhabitants. WHO estimates 205 road traffic fatalities annually, and OECD ranks Latvia the second worst performing country in the European Union, after Bulgaria, with 9.4 deaths per 100,000 people. According to the WHO, Latvia has strong laws addressing drink-driving, child restraint and safety-belt use; however, speeding, and helmet laws need to be improved. Latvia acceded to four out of six UN Road Safety Conventions. It is not a contracting party to the 1997 Agreement on Technical Inspection of Vehicles and 1998 Agreement on Global Vehicle Regulations.
