United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Development, Habitat III

The New Urban Agenda sets forth a great vision for sustainable mobility and transport. One that includes road safety as a key consideration in urban planning and infrastructure design. At Habitat III, the United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development, which took place in Quito, Ecuador from 17 to 20 October 2016, the Special Envoy presented on road safety during multiple events.

Mr. Jean Todt, the United Nations Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Road Safety addressed the Special Session on Transport and Mobility, and hosted a side event on road safety with United Nations regional commissions - UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and UN Economic Commission for Latin America and Caribbean (UNECLAC), the Mayor of Mexico City, United Nations Institute for Training and Research and private sector representatives. The Special Envoy and UNECE also participated during the consultation process of developing the New Urban Agenda, which highlights the importance of awareness raising campaigns, addresses vulnerable road users such as children, cyclists and pedestrians, as well as paints a future where every child, regardless of where they live, can have a safe journey to school, whether it is by foot, public transport, or as a passenger in motor vehicles.
