Special Envoy Advocates Road Safety in Kuwait

On 11 February, the Special Envoy met with high-level government officials in Kuwait, encouraging them to consider accession to the remaining four United Nations road safety conventions, recommended developing a national road safety strategy and establish a lead agency for road safety, in line with best practices. He further encouraged consideration of support to the recently established United Nations Road Safety Trust Fund, aimed at supporting Member States’ efforts toward improving road safety.
During his mission, the Special Envoy met with the following high-level government officials: 
  • Sheikh Nasser Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense
  • Ms. Mariam Al-Aqeel, Minister of State of Economic Affairs
  • Mr. Abdullatif Yousef Al hamad, General Manager and Chairman of the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development
  • Mr. Khaled Al-Jarallah, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs

On 12 February, the Special Envoy met with Dr. Tarek El-Sheikh, UN Resident Coordinator of Kuwait, and provided him an overview of his mandate and activities as well as his current priorities. The Special Envoy shared about his meetings with above government officials. He further expressed a concern about discrepancy in road fatality numbers reported by government and estimated by WHO and encouraged UNCT’s support to the government in improving their data management approach and in acceding to the remaining United Nations road safety conventions, should the government consider.
