Turkmen side-event on intermodal connectivity and the role of historical transport routes: the Great Silk Road

Main purpose

The event will focus on enhancing the interaction of the parties involved in the creation and operation of international transport corridors, the formation of transport networks combining road, rail, sea and air routes, through intermodal logistics centers and land ports.
 
Participants are invited to share with their visions on further perspectives of historical transport routes and opinion on main aspects on the main aspects touched upon in the UN General Assembly Resolution A/RES/72/212 «Strengthening the links between all modes of transport to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals».
 
During this event, participants will be asked to consider the revival of historical transport routes through the lens of intermodality, with particular attention to one of the longest and most important routes that passed through the Pan-European region.

Introduction
 
On December 20, 2017, at the 74th meeting of the 72nd session of the United Nations General Assembly, the resolution A/RES/72/212 "Strengthening the links between all modes of transport to achieve the Sustainable Development goals" submitted by Turkmenistan was unanimously adopted. The 74 states became a co-author of the resolution. The Resolution reaffirming the commitment to enhancing the role of sustainable transport and mobility in creating jobs, promoting mobility and improving the efficiency of logistics chains in terms of ensuring access of individuals and communities to work, schools and health services, and the organization of the supply to the rural and urban areas with goods and services, so that everyone had equal opportunity, and nobody was forgotten and left behind.
Additionally, the Resolution encourages efforts to promote regional and interregional economic integration and cooperation, including through improved planning of transport infrastructure and increased mobility, strengthening transport links and facilitate trade and investment.
 
The Resolution also contained recommendations to States to maximize synergies in the planning and development of transport corridors and infrastructure through the relevant international standards and actions aimed at the harmonization of rules and technical standards. As well as reiterate the importance of addressing the special needs of landlocked developing countries, inter alia, by establishing and promoting efficient transit transport systems that link them to international markets, and in this regard reaffirming that the Almaty Declaration, the Vienna Declaration and the Vienna Programme of Action for Landlocked Developing Countries for the Decade 2014– 2024 constitute a fundamental framework for genuine partnerships between landlocked and transit developing countries and their development partners at the national, bilateral, subregional, regional and global levels.
The Great Silk Road that run across number of UNECE countries in the ancient times receives new incarnation. Convenient and safe international corridors with the involvement of railroad, automobile, air and water transport are made in the UNECE countries provides sustainable development in the region, consolidation of neighbour relations between the peoples, political and cultural cooperation and increase of trade turnover volumes, as well as open new opportunities for fruitful relations between the countries of the region and for consolidation of their economic power.
