Regional Workshop on Motorcycle Safety, Kuala Lumpur, 7 April 2017

Following successful regional road safety workshops in Africa and Latin American regions, the Special Envoy partnered with the Government of Malaysia to host next in the series of Special Envoy's capacity building events -  Regional Workshop on Motorcycle Safety, which took place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 7 April 2017. The workshop was participated by government officials and civil society representatives from 13 countries in the South-East Asia region, where more than half of global road traffic fatalities occur, while 34 per cent of the deaths involving powered two-wheelers.
Hosted by the Ministry of Transport of Malaysia and Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) and co-organized by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), this regional initiative has covered motorcycle crashes as one of the major causes of road casualties as well as the ways to prevent it through the mandatory use of a proper helmet and proper enforcement. It was a great opportunity to enhance regional dialogue on the necessary rules to manage safe helmet usage, particularly with the implementation of UN Regulation No. 22 and related United Nations road safety conventions.
