Monitoring and Review

Monitoring progress towards women’s empowerment and gender equality in the region
Robust monitoring and accountability mechanisms are vital to ensure progress towards international commitments on gender equality. We assist our member States in monitoring progress in the advancement of women, by providing forums for review and supporting the production of gender statistics.

What we do to monitor progress towards gender equality

  • We monitor progress in the implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action. We provide a forum for our member States to review progress and identify challenges in the implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action. This periodically organized review takes place every five years, since 2000: 2000, 2004, 20092014 and 2019.
  • We follow-up and review the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, including the Sustainable Development Goals on gender equality. We convene the Regional Forum on Sustainable Development which provides a regional space to share policy solutions, best practices and challenges in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, including gender equality as a cross-cutting issue.

In focus: Regional reviews of the Beijing Platform for Action

At the Fourth World Conference on Women (Beijing, 1995), UN member States adopted and committed to implement the Beijing Platform for Action, which identifies twelve critical areas of concern with respect to the advancement of women and the achievement of gender equality. Worldwide progress in the implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action is reviewed every five years by the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW).The five UN regional commissions, in cooperation with UN Women, coordinate the review and appraisal process. With its periodically organized regional reviews of the implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action, UNECE provides a forum for its member States to monitor progress and identify remaining challenges on a regional level.
