Meetings with Government and UN officials in Kenya

The Special Envoy travelled to Nairobi, Kenya on 24-27 November 2020 and held bilateral meetings with government stakeholders.

During his meetings, the Special Envoy informed about the new global targets and encouraged safer transport. Furthermore, the Special Envoy highlighted initiatives of the UNRSF and encouraged accession to the remaining UN Road Safety Conventions.

The Special Envoy met with the following Government officials in Kenya: 
o     H.E. Mr. Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta, President;
o    H.E. Mr. James Wainaina Macharia, Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure, Housing, Urban Development and Public Works;
o    H.E. Ms. Amina Mohamed, Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Sports, Heritage and Culture of Kenya;
o    H.E. Mr. Valentin Zellweger, Ambassador of Switzerland to the United Nations Office in Nairobi.

On 25 November 2020, the Special Envoy virtually met with the United Nations Country Team (UNCT) in Kenya to discuss the road safety situation in the country with its challenges as well as the way forward.

The Special Envoy shared about road safety in the Sustainable Development Goals. He also highlighted the UN efforts including the UN Road Safety Strategy, the UNRSF and the UN Road Safety Conventions.

In conclusion, the Special Envoy encouraged the UNCT to closely collaborate with and support the Government in achieving national and regional road safety goals, as well as in developing a new National Road Safety Plan 2021-2030. Led by Mr. Siddharth Chatterjee, UN Resident Coordinator, UNCT members representing the following agencies participated in the meeting: UNAIDS, UN-Habitat, UNEP, UNFPA, WHO, IOM.

On 26 November, the Special Envoy met with Ms. Maimunah Mohd Sharif, Executive Director, UN-Habitat, in Nairobi.

Throughout the discussion, the Special Envoy shared appreciation for the Executive Director’s contribution to the Fourth UN Partnership Meeting for Road Safety and for the strong collaboration with UN-Habitat in promoting safer urban mobility. Mr. Todt also informed of road safety in the Sustainable Development targets and UN-Habitat role in pushing SDG target 11.2.
